Press Release by Association of Supply Chain Professionals (ASCP)

India's first homegrown association for supply chain and logistics professionals named the 'Association of Supply Chain Professionals” was registered under the Societies Registration Act,1860 and launched recently in the commercial hub of Mumbai. Last week at a brief ceremony in one of the star hotels of suburban Mumbai, the logo of this newly formed association was unveiled and the news related to its commencement, was made public by its Managing Committee. The launch function was attended by supply chain leaders from across the country.

The Association is expected to promote the supply-chain and logistics professionals and build up desired levels of expertise and skills of professionals in the supply chain system, besides leading policy initiatives and voice and provide a platform for the systematic and sound growth of the profession in India. The Association will provide opportunities for professionals to communicate, develop and improve supply-chain managerial skills and create awareness about innovations and appropriate supply-chain systems for efficient business growth thereby strengthening the economy. The Association proposes to do this through active stakeholder engagement at the national, regional and state levels as well as through employers and educators across the spectrum.

Members of the Association of Supply Chain Professionals (ASCP) elected officials and had appointed Members to its Management Committee for 2017-2020, when the Association was formally registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 in Mumbai last month.The Association will work towards connecting professionals, educating aspirants, skills development, creating jobs and thus contribute to nationbuilding.

Ashish Pednekar, President -Brihan Mumbai Customs House Agents Association (BCHAA) and past President of Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture (MACCIA) was appointed as the President of ASCP. Anshuman Neil Basu, Chief Executive of SCM Programs and Ex-Executive Director of CSCMP, the world’s oldest and biggest body of Supply Chain Professionals, was appointed as the Honorary Secretary General of this newly formed body.

Dr. TAS Vijayaraghavan, Professor, Operations and Decision Sciences Area & Information Systems and Chairperson, Centre for Logistics &SCM, XLRI Jamshedpur, and Dr. K G Karmakar, Ex Managing Director, NABARD & Ex-Professor, SPJIMR (an author of several books on Rural Banking and Micro-Finance) were appointed as Chair- Academic Research & Policies and Chair for Agri-Supply Chain, respectively. Amitava Bakshi, Chief Procurement Officer, Tata Steel was appointed as the Honorary Vice President. Several other prominent leaders and practitioners from the industry are already members of this Association and were present during the logo unveiling ceremony. A Membership drive is proposed to be launched soon.

“The supply chain and logistics costs are too high and the profession needs to have a voice and be organized here in India, implementing best-practices and contribute to every area of business where supply-chain is involved”, said Dr. Karmakar, during the launch of the ceremony.

“India is undergoing an era of rapid economic transformation in a saturated and highly competitive and inter-connected global market where innovation and the market size is the key to success. India provides ample opportunities and new avenues for reducing costs in business delivery. An efficient and robust supply chain is the backbone of every industry and the country should be ready to support this much-needed transformation. As we are gearing up for GST perceived as the game-changer for the Economy, we must be technologically ready for tomorrow and remain up-to-date with the latest in systems, today”, said Anshuman Neil Basu, Hon. Secretary General of this newly-constituted body.
